Plumber Mechanic
Job Purpose/Reason:
Under general supervision, leads and performs skilled journeyman level plumbing in the installation, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of plumbing fixtures and equipment, such as valves, controls devices, pumps, boilers, toilets, faucets, water and sewer lines, and gas and air lines.
Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Experience & Training
- Five (5) years comparable experience.
- Nine (9) years if apprentice-level training program was not completed.
Journeyman level knowledge of commercial plumbing systems, including extensive knowledge of maintenance techniques, equipment and tools of the plumbing trade. Skills in diagnosing and correcting routine to moderately complex problems with plumbing systems and equipment to include:
- Install boilers. Fabricate and install piping for boilers. Test and place in operation.
- Measure and cut pipes to specifications. Sweat copper joints. Measure, cut and thread galvanized pipe.
- Select fittings and install valves.
- Install commodes, bathtubs, sinks and urinals. Prepare position rest; hang, fasten, and test.
- Disconnect old, install, and connect new water heater in conformance with specifications. Mechanical contractor license or plumbing journeyman level certification.
Other Skills/Requirements
Must posses a valid drivers license for the State of south Carolina. Must be computer literate and capable of processing e-mails, scheduling work, working with basic computer programs, etc. Use of welding equipment and torches is desired. Some knowledge of sheet metal work is desired. Auditorium, gym, sound and lighting experience is also desired. Good communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Mechanical contractor license or plumbing journeyman level certification.Vocational/Technical School, Associates Degree and/or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Primary Position Responsibilities:
Perform journeyman level plumbing installations, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of plumbing fixtures and equipment, such as valves, control devices, pumps, boilers toilets, faucets, water and sewer lines and gas and air lines – 20%.
Replace defective parts in plumbing fixtures and systems. Repair existing systems; clears clogged drainage lines; repair or replace sewer lines – 30%.
Rebuild and replace toilet valves, faucets and plumbing valves – 10%.
Determine problems with water systems; repair valves, faucets and toilets and assist in ordering replacement parts as necessary; repair or replace drinking fountains or related parts – 10%.
Inspect, test, repair and certify back flow prevention devices; maintain related records – 5%.
Perform soldering and welding repair work – 5%.
Review plumbing plans and specifications for conformity to codes, regulations and safety orders – 5%.
Install rough plumbing; set fixtures, move vents and rough plumbing and reinstall fixtures – 5%.
Estimate materials and labor needed; maintain records related to work performed; order plumbing supplies and materials according to established procedures – 5%.
Assist in installing, repairing and maintaining heating systems and controls; repair and maintain boilers – 5%.
Physical/Mental Requirements:

Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform physical work. Must be willing to perform all related plumbing repair duties. Ability to operate manual and electric tools and diagnostic equipment, e.g., welding equipment, recovery equipment, gauges, and torch. Must be licensed to operate motor vehicles within the state of SC.
Sedentary Work: N/A
Stress Level: Must possess skills to meet deadlines for time sensitive projects. Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
