Organizational Unit Overview
Facilities Engineering & Architectural Services (FEAS) is a department within the Campus Operations Division of Administration and Finance.
FEAS is responsible for development of the real property of the University to support the mission of teaching, research, public service, and patient care. All the traditional services of urban planners, architects, engineers, and other environmental design disciplines are procured and managed by this department.
Key departmental responsibilities include the design and construction of new buildings, renovations of existing facilities, management and implementation of the University’s utility infrastructure master plan and management of the University’s repair and renovation program.
Job Duties:
Engineers may be responsible for consultation, investigation, evaluation and planning, design, design review and approval, and/or determination of environmental and safety impacts of work processes and products (buildings, utilities, systems, sites, mapping, or infrastructures); provide project management oversight, which may include supervision of lower level staff; oversee or review environmental, infrastructure and geomatic projects; and manage implementation of projects/plans according to codes and regulations, which may include approval authority. Work assignments may involve unique factors and be lacking in precedence on which to base decisions and may be technically complex as evidenced by a high number of variables and inter-related considerations. Work is often performed independently requiring professional knowledge of complex and/or detailed technical procedures. Work may require considerable public contact to explain standards and regulations, or appearance before a regulatory/judicial body, provide consultation and technical assistance, and may require negotiation to determine the feasibility of project implementation or continuation. Work performed includes exercising judgment and decision-making that directly impacts life, health, safety and/or the environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Prefer registration as a Licensed Engineer in the State of North Carolina with 4 or more years managing complex design and construction projects including selecting architects and engineers for projects and managing the planning, design and construction processes. Prefer individual with experience managing all types of projects including building renovations, new construction as well as infrastructure projects in-ground and in-facility. Infrastructure examples include mechanical, electrical, plumbing and civil utility systems. Experience with these types of projects occurring in a complex campus environment is a plus. Experience working on similar projects with NC Office of State Construction is a plus as well. Work may require professional licensure or other certifications.
