Job Description

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full-time Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Attorney in the Office of EEO. Reporting directly to the Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Director of EEO, the successful candidate will: conduct complex investigations of workplace-related violations while adhering to investigation best practices at each critical step, including: receiving and triaging employee complaints, formulating investigation plans, performing witness interviews and evidence collection, building and documenting factual records, and applying the appropriate legal standards to arrive at factually supported and legally sound conclusions. The attorney will exercise significant independent judgment to make recommendations to the Assistant Commissioner of EEO that impact personnel and the workplace. The attorney will also be responsible for conducting EEO compliance inspections and delivering EEO training to FDNY employees, EEO counselors, and FDNY units as needed.  The attorney may also be responsible for assisting with the reasonable accommodations process and compiling workplace statistics and reports.

 

The ability to communicate effectively, including the ability write clearly and concisely, is an essential requirement of this position.

 

Minimum Qual Requirements

  1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
  2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
  3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).

 

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

 

In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:

To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

 

Preferred Skills

Prior investigative, prosecutorial, or litigation experience strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of Title VII of the Civil Rights Law of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and New York State and City Human Rights Laws. Excellent writing, analytical, communications, and people skills. Ability to complete assigned tasks with deadlines with others or in an independent, organized, and timely manner.

 

The ability to effectively work within a first responder or paramilitary organization; Experience serving a unionized workforce; - Experience with the full range of Microsoft tools, including Word, Access and Excel. - Ability to serve in an "on call" capacity for a dynamic agency that operates continuously.
