Gaston College is seeking to fill the position of: Instructor-Emergency Medical Science
(EMS Education), 9-Month.
Provide quality instruction and monitor teaching/learning effectiveness in courses assigned by the EMS Education Program Director in which the instructor has appropriate qualifications. Use current skills and knowledge to promote student engagement in teaching and learning in EMT classes and Paramedic classes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in the assessment of instructional needs of the designated EMS programs. Plan, evaluate, and revise, as well as develop and implement, curriculum needs, course syllabi, and outcomes to assure the completion of program goals and requirements. Ensure instructional quality for the student as assessed by content mastery and competency-based skills.
- Adhere to national accredited paramedic program requirements, CoAEMSP standards and guidelines.
- Maintain current licensure, level of expertise and awareness of current changes in discipline by work experience, conferences, continuing education units, course work, journals, etc.
- Ensure that course syllabi are revised to accurately reflect the student expectations of the course including any new competencies identified through the systematic program evaluation process.
- Provide students with current written information regarding course requirements, grade determination, testing and other assignments, as well as information regarding program polices and regulations. This information is to be supplied to the students for each course a faculty member is assigned to teach.
- Actively participate in meetings scheduled by the Program Director for the purpose of sharing information and provide input in the decision-making process with colleagues.
- Compile, administer and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner so that the student is aware of his/her progress and allow time for the development of a plan that will promote student success and a positive outcome. Use computer and internet programs to disseminate information to students, prepare exams, and prepare class presentations as pertinent.
- Provide a safe environment for students; encourage students to use available support services; encourage group activities and involvement of classes within health science programs as appropriate. Collaborate with support services to ensure information is shared and discussed.
- Responsible for the security of assigned equipment, classrooms, office, and all other teaching materials.
- Maintain FERPA standards and Title IX standards as applied to public institutions of higher learning.
- Assist in the responsibility of upholding Gaston College’s and the EMS Program's rules and regulations. Assist in implementing changes according to the recommendations set forth by the accrediting agencies and ensure that the program remains in compliance with said rules and regulations.
- Follow the established clinical affiliation agreements with accredited clinical agencies.
- Provide information and/or data to administration so that reports may be completed and filed with the proper educational agency, funding agency, or accrediting agency. Participate in the collection of data utilized in the Systematic Evaluation Plan of the respective program and the department.
- Follow the procedures related to the Registrar's Office such as grade reports and deadlines, attendance record reports, withdrawal deadlines, class changes, and time and room scheduling.
- Follow Gaston College’s course, faculty, and student evaluation procedures.
- Submit absence reports within one week of occurrence.
- Substitute for colleagues when necessary.
- Prepare, assign, and direct the students in library research and/or outside assignments.
- Positively promote Gaston College’s programs and curricula.
- Follow the academic calendar as approved by the Gaston College Board of Trustees.
- Participate in Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation activities; implement the Institutional Effectiveness plan in occupation area.
- Participates in assessment, implementation, and evaluation of Institutional Effectiveness measures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Dean of Health and Human Services Division.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution in Emergency Medical Science or related field required.
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution preferred.
- Must be a current North Carolina Paramedic.
- Current National Registered Paramedic Credential preferred.
- EMS Instructor Level I Credential from the North Carolina Office of EMS required; Level II Credential preferred.
- Must meet minimum SACS criteria and the minimum criteria of other pertinent accrediting, licensing, and credentialing agencies in the area of teaching assignment.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Five years’ experience as a certified EMT Paramedic required.
- Three years’ EMS clinical experience in the field and/or college-level EMS teaching experience preferred.
- EMS teaching experience at a community college preferred.
- Experience in EMS Service leadership, management, and/or supervision preferred.
