ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN FINANCE BOARD

The New York City campaign Finance Board is a nonpartisan, independent city agency that enhances the role of New York City residents in elections. ABOUT THE UNIT/DEPARTMENT

The Marketing & Digital Communications Department is recruiting for a Language Access Specialist, Spanish to provide translation, transcreation and linguistic quality assurance for the CFB’s Spanish content. This new role will act as the Spanish language subject matter expert and ensure that translations, transcreation and localized content are consistent, accurate and stylistically and culturally adapted for a New York City audience across all materials developed by the CFB. The ideal candidate will be an experienced linguist with proven experience implementing Spanish translation, transcreation and localization best practices, as well as developing linguistic assets, such as creating and maintaining translation memories, glossaries, and style guides.

Reporting to the Language Access Manager, this role supports Spanish translations for a variety of projects, including the official NYC Voter Guide available online at www.nycvotes.org and mailed to 5 million voters citywide. This is an exciting opportunity for a language industry professional who wants to help make local government more accessible and responsive to the needs of immigrant communities in New York City.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Translate materials from English to Spanish, completing projects as assigned.
  • Ensure quality, consistency, and continuous improvement of in-house and vendor translations in Spanish.
  • Follow and help implement consistent translation processes, including use of computer-assisted translation tools (CAT tools) and translation management systems.
  • Create translation memories (TMs), merge TMX files from vendors, and regularly review and maintain TMs to ensure accuracy and consistency across materials.
  • Assist in localizing Spanish website by translating content via our localization management system, Smartling, and completing QA assessments of localized content.
  • Manage the creation and maintenance of Spanish translation glossaries or term bases.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining Spanish translation style guide and ensure that vendors and other stakeholders adhere to linguistic guidelines.
  • Collaborate with, proofread, and edit work of Spanish translation vendors.
  • When appropriate, solicit, evaluate, and incorporate input from other stakeholders.
  • Provide feedback to Spanish translation vendors and linguists.
  • Track data of completed requests to facilitate reporting.
  • Assists the agency in achieving its overall mission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Comprehensive experience translating, editing, proofreading and transcreating content from English to Spanish.
  • Proficiency in CAT tools (Trados Studio) and Microsoft Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience creating and maintaining linguistic assets, such as translation memories, term bases, and style guides.
  • Able to work well under pressure and effectively prioritize tasks to keep team members focused amidst shifting timelines and needs.
  • Strong communicator and collaborator who can adapt to a variety of work styles.
  • Skillfully synthesizes feedback and edits from multiple stakeholders and ensures that they are executed accurately.
  • Reliable and self-directed team member with a strong ability to identify and propose solutions to unexpected obstacles and challenges.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3 years of related work experience in translation, transcreation, localization, or Spanish language consultancy.
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, with a concentration on Spanish, linguistics, translation/interpretation, or related field.
  • Comfort using software and digital tools for editing and content management.
