Position Title: Engineering Inspector Technician

Salary Range: (DOE/Q) $43,502.74 - $69,169.36

Description of Work:
Position will function as Engineering inspector under direct supervision of the Town Construction Engineer and provide support to the Engineering and Public Works Department by representing the Town’s interest on a variety of construction projects.
Essential Duties, Skills, and Demands of the Position:
Performs technical and detail-oriented work requiring application of civil engineering principles and common construction practices.
Performs field inspections and testing on a variety of construction projects to assure compliance with applicable plans and specifications.
Responds to inquiries and complaints from public and private agencies and the general public.
Assists in project layout and general construction surveying.
Rejects defective work and advises contractors of necessary corrective action.
Prepares project reports
Provides technical advice regarding Town standards as related to the installation and repair of utilities, streets, storm drainage, sidewalks, grading and erosion control.
Performs other duties as apparent or assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in various types of construction; proficiency in reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications; excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to work well with with others and in a team environment; ability to interact courteously and effectively with public and contracting community; ability to plan, organize and prioritize work and complete assignments with minimal supervision; proficient in Microsoft Office; posess or have the ability to obtain applicable NCDOT testing certifications.
Training and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or GED with three (3) years experience in field engineering and construction/maintenance projects or equivilent combination of education, work experience and revelant industry/job specific knowledge, skills, and/or certifications. Previous experience in public works as well as college coursework in civil engineering, engineering technology, construction management or related field is preferred. Surveying knowledge and experience is preferred.
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 20 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting, frequently repetitive motions and generally requires speaking or hearing; work requires depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently working near moving traffic and mechanical parts and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (nonweather); work is occasionally in a loud noise location; subject to occassional emergency/afterhours call-back and scheduled afterhours work.
Special Requirements
Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
