Description of Work:
Position will function as Public Works Technician under direct supervision of the Public Works Supervisor and Public Works Crew Leader and will be expected exhibit skill in the safe use and care of assigned equipment including hand & power tools in the performance of various grounds, storm water, and street maintenance tasks.
Essential Duties, Skills, and Demands of the Position:
Perform shoulder and ditching work along public right of ways.
Assists with various asphalt and concrete maintenance and patching.
Performs general stormwater drainage maintenance.
Performs grounds’ maintenance duties including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees.
Assists with horticultural practices such as fertilizing, planting, spreading seed and lime, and watering.
Assists with the fabrication and installation of street name markers and roadway signs.
Performs other duties as apparent or assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in grounds and street maintenance; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Must be available for emergency call-back.
Training and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or GED with and minimal experience in grounds and street maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting, frequently repetitive motions and occasionally requires speaking or hearing; work requires depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently working near moving traffic and mechanical parts and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a loud noise location.
Special Requirements
Possession of a driver's license with appropriate endorsements valid in the State of North Carolina.
