The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for a Research Operations Manager for the College of Engineering. This is a full-time, permanent staff position. 

Purpose of the Position: The primary role of this position is to manage and supervise all activities necessary to operate one or more research and instructional work settings such as a laboratory, shop, clinic, field and/or classroom. 

Salary: $56,696 - $62,500

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major related to assigned field and two years of experience in laboratory management; or graduation from high school and five years of experience as a research technician, research mechanic, or university laboratories mechanic or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Duties: Work requires knowledge of research laboratory operation, instructional concepts, practices and procedures, laboratory operations, regulatory requirements, and planning/budgeting. 
The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: 

  • Support research / instructional laboratory and shop operations by managing equipment used by faculty in the mechanical engineering department for their research/instruction laboratory demonstrations.
  • Facility planning and maintenance.
  • Inventory control and purchasing of laboratory equipment.
  • Fiscal and administrative services
  • Monitoring environmental risks and safety. 
  • Maintaining environmental safety and regulatory compliance with the university including EH&S compliance.
  • Operation any and all research equipment and machines designed or procured. 
  • Advise student competition teams by teaching proper design and manufacturing techniques using software, and current industry methods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with a four-year college degree in the area of engineering/technology/applied physical sciences will be preferred.
  • Familiar with automotive electrical diagnostics, batteries, and equipment.
  • Experience organizing and maintaining all safety/environmental safety and health records for labs, including MSDS, chemical inventory, JSA’s, training records, and EH&S documents of safe practices.
  • Abilities in NC programming, Tig welding, and any and all tools and equipment necessary to hand fabricate steel metal.
  • Familiarity with a variety of the research fields concepts, practices, and procedures. 
  • Demonstrated experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
