Lead Teacher, Macfeat Laboratory School

The Richard W. Riley College of Education at Winthrop University is seeking two lead teachers for the Macfeat Laboratory School.
The Macfeat Laboratory School at Winthrop University, founded in 1895, functions as a research laboratory where innovative approaches in early childhood education are investigated. As one of the longest continuously operating laboratory schools in the nation, Macfeat serves as an education site for prospective teachers and other professionals that work with young children. Macfeat strives to meet the needs of a diverse population of learners (ages 3 to 5 years in full- and half-day programs) while exploring ways to better meet the challenges of educating young children in the 21st century. Macfeat is nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Major Responsibilities:
Teach three and four-year-old children in a full-day school environment
Plan and implement innovative, individualized curriculum that actively engages students in developmentally and academically appropriate learning experiences
Supervise and assist in the professional development of graduate and undergraduate students employed by the laboratory school
Mentor university students assigned to the classroom in field experiences associated with university coursework
Meet with the laboratory school director, faculty, and staff to support school requirements such as goals setting, accreditation, curriculum, and other regulations
Establish and maintain effective communication and relationships with families to include formal conferences and ongoing student progress reports
Participate in appropriate professional development opportunities
Collaborate with Winthrop faculty on research
Other duties as assigned by the director
Employment Conditions: A 10.5-month, full-time position. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
At least one of the following:
A bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, early childhood special education, elementary education, or child development
A bachelor’s degree with 36 higher education credits in early childhood, child development, elementary education, and/or early childhood special education.
A bachelor’s degree with state teacher certification and certification is reflective of the age of the children served
(derived from NAEYC Accreditation Standards for Early Learning Programs)
Successful teaching experience with three, four, and/or five year olds
Knowledge and ability to communicate relevance of current issues and trends in early childhood education
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in early childhood education, early childhood special education, elementary education, child development, or closely related field
Teacher licensure or certification in early childhood, early childhood special education, or elementary education
At least three to five years of successful teaching experience
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at the department, college, university, and community levels
Knowledge of DSS childcare licensing and regulations
Accreditation experience with NAEYC
